Psychoanalysis · São Paulo · in person and online

Psychoanalysis in plain English.

I’m Felipe Fiori, a psychoanalyst. I work with relationships, grief, anxiety, depression and dependency, using everyday life and pop culture as a bridge to what is hard to say.

What I work with

When it makes sense to start

You don’t need to be in crisis to start. Most people arrive here through one of these five paths.

  1. Relationships

Repeating the same kind of relationship without understanding why. Arguments that always circle back to the same point.

  2. Grief

A loss that doesn’t pass. Also the end of a marriage, of a job, of a plan for a life.

  3. Anxiety

The mind that won’t switch off at night. The body that warns you before you understand what is going on.

  4. Depression

The flatness that nobody reads as real exhaustion. The pleasure that drained out of things that used to be enough.

  5. Dependency, chemical or emotional

A use that got out of hand, yours or someone close to you. Or a relationship you can’t leave even knowing it harms you.

Method

How I work

Psychoanalysis doesn’t give advice and doesn’t hand out a manual. It opens room for you to hear what you have been saying all along without noticing. What I do differently is the translation: in place of jargon, I use what is at hand, a film, a series, a scene from your week, to give an image to what has no word yet.

Bridges I use in session

  • Rue, from Euphoria

The substance that promises to quiet what doesn’t fit into words.

  • Jamie, from Adolescence

What the son doesn’t tell and what nobody at home asks.

  • Robby, from The Pitt

The one who holds everyone up and has no one to hold on to.

  • The Secret Agent

The past that doesn’t pass and comes back asking for words.

  • Batman

The different ways of working through grief, or of not working through it.

Who you’ll be talking to

About Felipe

I came to psychoanalysis as a patient first. Between 2010 and 2016 I tried several ways out of my own anguish, and the one that worked was with an analyst who had also come from another field. Before that I trained as an accountant very young and spent ten years as an actor: it was on stage that I learned to investigate human emotion.

Today I see adults, teenagers, couples and older people. Before any theory, what interests me is your story, told the way you tell it.

Training
Instituto Antônio Diogo, with professor Dany Kanaan, PhD from PUC-SP, from 2020 to 2024
Experience
Placements at a rehabilitation clinic for chemical dependency and at a psychiatric day hospital
Study
Case discussion groups, ongoing

“Warm and creative. Felipe listened to my story with a lot of care and attention. I really liked the examples he used.”

Questions

Psychoanalyst, psychologist, psychiatrist: what is the difference?

The psychiatrist is a medical doctor and can prescribe medication. The psychologist holds a degree in psychology and can work with several approaches. The psychoanalyst trains in the theory and the practice of psychoanalysis, and the work always happens through speech. The three don’t compete with each other: plenty of people are in analysis and under psychiatric care at the same time.

How long does an analysis last?

Analysis has no fixed term, and be wary of anyone who promises one. The difference usually shows up in the first weeks: the problem starts to fit into words.

Does it work online?

It works online. Analysis happens through speech, and speech crosses a screen. What matters is having somewhere you can talk without being overheard.

What if I don’t know what to say?

Not knowing what to say is the most common thing in the world, and it becomes material to work with. You don’t need to arrive with a subject prepared.

Is it confidential?

It is confidential. Nothing you say leaves that room.

What times do you have?

We arrange the times in the first conversation, in Alto da Lapa or online. One session a week, on a fixed day and time.

Do you take health insurance?

I don’t take health insurance. Sessions are private.

How much does it cost?

We agree on the fee in the first conversation. There are places at a reduced fee set aside for people who need them.

Let’s talk

Send me a message on WhatsApp telling me, in a few lines, what is going on. I answer personally and we arrange a first conversation to see, together, whether it makes sense to carry on.
